I want to go to a movie!

1. Task Definition Define the information problem I want to go see a movie at a movie theatre Friday night.

1. Task Definition Identify the information needed. Which movie do I want to see? Where is it playing? What time does it start? How long does it last? How much does it cost?

2. Information Seeking Strategies Determine all possible sources Ask my friends. Check the newspaper. Call the theatre. Check the Internet. Visit the possible theatres. Call Hollywood.

2. Information Seeking Strategies Select the best source. Ask my friends. Do they know about all the movies and theatres? Check the newspaper. Do I have a copy of the newspaper at home? Where can I get a copy? Call the theatre. Do I know the name and phone numbers of the theatres?

2. Information Seeking Strategies Select the best source. Check the Internet. Do I know of a reliable site that tells what movies are playing near Gilbert? Visit the possible theatres. Is this a productive use of my time and money? Call Hollywood. Do you know someone in Hollywood to call?

3. Location and Access Locate sources Check the newspaper. The media center has a copy of the newspaper. Call the theatre. I will call Pastime, General, Columbiana, and Carmike.

3. Location and Access Find information within sources. Check the newspaper. Page D2 tells me the times and theatres with phone numbers.

3. Location and Access Find information within sources. Call the theatre. Pastime Pavilion has the best time, so I call the number listed in the paper to ask about the price.

4. Use of Information Engage (e.g. read, hear, view, touch) go to Pastime Pavilion select my seat watch and listen to the movie.

4. Use of Information Extract relevant information I decide I like the actors, but I didn’t like the ending. The times were accurate, so I was able to leave the movie in time to get home by 11:00 I forgot to bring enough money for popcorn and a coke.

5. Synthesize Organize from multiple sources. I based my opinion of the evening on the movie (music, acting, photography, etc. the environment of the theatre, my friend’s opinion.)

5. Synthesize Present the information. I tell my family how I enjoyed the movie. I tell my friends how I enjoyed the evening and the movie!

6. Evaluation Judge the product (effectiveness) I accomplished my goal of seeing a movie on Friday night.

6. Evaluation Judge the process (efficiency) The theatre I chose was the correct choice. Next time I want to see a movie with a happy ending, so I need to read reviews about a movie before I go. I definitely want to go out again with my friend! I need to plan better for expenses!
