Possible Sr. Projects from Michael Scarpulla Neil E. Cotter ECE Department UNIVERSITY OF UTAH necotter@ece.utah.edu

Solar Cells Simulations and calculations of light trapping in nanostructured ultra-thin Si solar cells

Thin Films Matlab simulation of thin film growth - interaction of deposited atoms with dislocation stress fields (we have the dislocation part already)

Laser Pwr Supply Fixing / re-engineering / building a pulsed power supply for a high- powered laser to give tunable ns pulses

Laser Simulation Matlab simulation of 1D laser- solid interactions - we have this partially done, need to integrate optical model with heat flow routine

Laser Simulation COMSOL simulations of 3D laser interactions with polycrystalline semiconductors

Plasmonic Oscillators COMSOL simulations of plasmonic phase-change oscillators

Solar Cells Building a system and protocols for measuring resistivity vs. temperature for thin film solar materials (hardware + Labview)

Photoluminescence Building a photoluminescence system (hardware + Labview)

Data Analysis Data analysis for admittance spectroscopy

Solar Cells Simulation of operation of thin film solar cells incorporating Cu2ZnSnS4 (electrostatics, CV, I- V)

LabView Other hardware + Labview integration projects to implement optoelectronic characterization techniques

Schrodinger Eqn Simulations of semiconductor band structures and vibrational modes (solving Schrodinger equation for 3D crystals using modern ab-initio packages

Solar Cells Characterize solar cells on the AM1.5 and IQE and then follow up with detailed electrical studies aiming to elucidate defect states

Thermal Evaporator Building up, testing, and using a thermal evaporator to deposit thin layers of sulfur and selenium for improving the quality of Cu2ZnSnS4 solar cells - could use 2 students.
