© 2012 IBM Corporation Have you ever wanted to see running most of the desktop virtualization delivery models real live within your own environment? Mobile Virtualization Services TRIAL is it! Benefits of Mobile Virtualization Services TRIAL approach: Fast implementation for budgeted price Demonstration of most desktop cloud delivery models Connection of new end use devices possible Scale up the TRIAL via Proof of Concept, Pilot to Production Standard IBM implementation due to proven network design sizing for each component/module availability concept scalability concept Before going „VDI“ a lot of questions are open:  How should I split the network for performance and security reasons?  Which is the right sizing for each component?  Should I use SAN or NAS?  How many Cores, RAM, Disk, NICs do I need for each server?  Should I use many server or a few big server?  How many vCPUs and RAM I need for a XenApp server?  How can I optimize the IOPS to the storage to increase the performance?  How can I provide high availability for each component?  In which steps can I scale up to a productive environment?... and much more architectural decisions you have to take, before you can start building an environment without a reference architecture. Mobile Virtualization Services TRIAL„VDI“ Production

© 2012 IBM Corporation IBM‘s approach is to grow from TRIAL to Production in four steps TRIAL Standard Implementation No customer specific configurations Demo of various „VDI“ delivery models Look & feel Proof of Concept Verification business critical requirements: applications network performance and latency integration into customer infrastructure end user feedback Pilot Selected end user group(s) Placement into operational environment Gather experience in daily usage and operations Production All targeted end user group(s) Placement into operational environment Extend, change, improve not productive productive

© 2012 IBM Corporation Step 1 – IBM Mobile Virtualization Services TRIAL This is a standard implementation without any customization. IT can use it to demonstrate the VDI delivery models and to get a feeling for running a private Desktop Cloud environment Scope of delivered Desktops: 3 published Desktops based on Citrix XenApp 3 virtual shared Desktops based on Citrix XenDesktop 3 virtual private Desktops based on Citrix XenDesktop 3 offline Desktops based on Citrix XenClient

© 2012 IBM Corporation Step 2 – PoC (option) The PoC proves unclear behaviors or capabilities in the Desktop Cloud or in conjunction with the current customer IT. Possible areas to proof and tests within a PoC phase: high availability WAN performance tests Citrix XenApp Server hardening Group policies to tailore desktop view User experience Test with new devices (iPad, Macbook, Smartphones Test of devices connected to the end user devices (camera, USB disk,...) muliple displays with different usage.

© 2012 IBM Corporation Step 3 – Pilot The Pilot is a productive environment with a limited number of users. The pilot is the last test of the operation of the „VDI“ before the mass deployment.

© 2012 IBM Corporation Step 4 – Productive environment component overview The productive environment is a scaled out Pilot environment. The components are added to provide the capacity needed for the rollout.

© 2012 IBM Corporation Step 4 – Productive network overview A network design proposal

© 2012 IBM Corporation Step 4 – Productive placement of server farms A location proposal based on TRIAL, PoC and Pilot experiences

© 2012 IBM Corporation  Scope of Workshop (example) –Strategic views on Desktop Cloud –Current Desktop/Workplace environment –Future Desktop/Workplace requirements –Current Desktop/Workplace virtualization technologies/architectures –Matching requirements with technologies/architecture –Next steps  Method can be „Whiteboard“ or presentation based  Many workshops have been held including feedback like „how much do I have to pay for your flip charts?“  Perfect next step is signing an agreement to implement IBM SmartCloud Desktop TRIAL Next Step – Assessment & Planning Workshop Before Step 1 we recommend to run a „SmartCloud Desktop Assessment & Planning Workshop“ Workshop
