3 How many times a day do you use mental Maths?  I have to leave in an hour. Do I have time to put in a load of wash?  I have a quarter tank of petrol. I am driving to Abu Dhabi. Do I need to fill up?  I have 35 Dirhams on me. Do I have enough cash for my shop?

6 Aims of the New NC The aim is for children to do calculations in their heads and, if the numbers are too large, to use a way of writing them down that helps their thinking. Can I solve it in my head? Can I solve it using jottings? Can I solve it using written methods?

22 Building on what they already know  If I know double 6, I know 6 + 7 =  If I can find 1 more or 1 less than a number, I can find 10 more or 10 less than a number  If I know 3 x 5, I know 30 x 50

23 How can you support at home?  Making Maths purposeful  At the shop – find change, round, estimate costs  Time – If I put the casserole in at 11:15 and it takes 45 minutes to cook, what time will it be finished at?  I have 150 ml of milk but need 200 ml. How many more ml do I need for the recipe?  During a week, look outside for ‘thirties’ numbers, such as 34 or 38,  on house doors, number plates, bus stops, etc. How many can you  spot?
