10. Year 2 Eventually children will be able to use the most efficient method when solving problems. Here are a few: 16 + 4 + 9 Look for pairs of numbers that total 20 7 + 5 + 21 Put the larger number first then count on 8 + 3 + 8 Add the doubles 39 - 14 Subtract 10 to give 29, then subtract 4 42 - 9 Subtract 10 to give 32, then add 1. We call this adjusting 74 - 52 Subtract 50 to give 24, then subtract 2. When a child has a solid understanding of place value, they will see that they do not need to count forward or back in ones.
