Day 3
7
Fertilization-2PN Immediately after fertilization, the egg contains two pronuclei. Each contains half the chromosomal material from the one of the genetic parents.
8
4-cells A four cell pre- embryo. Each of the cells is called a blastomere. The embryo is surrounded by a protein matrix "shell" called the zona pellucida.
9
Hatching Prior to implantation, the pre-embryo, now at the blastocyst stage, must hatch out of the zona pellucida prior to implantation.

Endometriosis This patient demonstrates endometriosis in the "cul- de-sac" (the area behind the uterus and in front of the rectum). She presented with painful intercourse diarrhea associated with the menstrual periods.

Testes Slide Slide 4 Seminiferous Tubule (rat) The small cells at the base of the seminiferous epithelium are spermatogonia. The ones with the largest nuclei are pachytene spermatocytes. There are spermatids (round & elongating) about to be released into the lumen. Bar=100 microns

Teses Slide 7 Seminiferous Tubule (rat) Two Sertoli cells (elongated cells with oval nuclei and prominent nucleoli) are attached to the basement membrane and stretch into the lumen of the tubule. A pachytene spermatocyte (blue) lies lower in the seminiferous epithelium than the round spermatids (red). Elongating spermatids at the apex are about to be released into the lumen as some already have. Bar=30 microns
