Overview TIA TR-50 – Smart Device Communications Orlett W. Pearson March 2010

2 | TIA TR-50 Smart Device Communications | Feb 4, 2010 TR-50 Smart Device Communications - Overview The Second TIA TR-50 was held in Washington, DC on February 4, 2010  Committee elected Chair and Vice-Chair Elections  TR-50 Chair: Jeffrey O. Smith, Ph.D (Numerex,Inc) –Numerex provides solutions in M2M including device, Network, and applications.  TR-50 Vice-Chair: James Wert Jr. (ILS Technology) –James has a strong background in “device to application” communications across many industries, especially the industrial and building automation spaces.  Committee approved the Scope and will begin working on the Terms of Reference (ToR)  A Working Group was created [TR-50.1] to address m2m architecture  Next meeting will be held in Denver, CO (USA) on March 10 – 11, 2010 (following the TR-45 meeting)

3 | TIA TR-50 Smart Device Communications | Feb 4, 2010 TR-50 Smart Device Communications - Overview The Scope for TIA TR-50:  Engineering Committee TR-50 Smart Device Communications is responsible for the development and maintenance of access agnostic interface standards for the monitoring and bi-directional communication of events and information between smart devices and other devices, applications or networks. These standards development efforts pertain to but are not limited to the functional areas as noted:  Requirements, System Architecture, Cross-industry communication, Leverage existing (and future) physical infrastructure, Information models (state diagrams), Security (e.g., data content, mutual authentication), End to End Performance and scalability of equipment and networks, Network Management/Operations, Device Management (incl. discovery and identity), Protocols, Minimum Performance, Conformance and interoperability Testing

4 | TIA TR-50 Smart Device Communications | Feb 4, 2010 TR-50 Smart Device Communications - Overview Scope, cont  TR-50 will develop a Smart Device Communications framework that can operate over different underlying transport networks (wireless, wired, etc.) and can be adapted to a given transport network by means of an adaptation/convergence layer. The TR-50 framework will make its functionality available to applications through a well-defined Application Programming Interface (API) that is agnostic to the vertical application domain (eHealth, Smart Grid, Industrial Automation, etc.)  TR-50 works with other TIA Engineering Committees and non-TIA standards forums (international or national standards) to ensure end-to-end functionality and interoperability and to avoid overlap or duplication of work and to foster collaboration and coordination among organizations addressing various components of Smart Device Communication Systems.

5 | TIA TR-50 Smart Device Communications | Feb 4, 2010 TR-50 Smart Device Communications - Overview Presentations:  Machine to Machine Communications Technology in ETSI, Omar Elloumi presented on behalf of ETSI  The Committee will look to partner with ETSI and other standards forum  David Su gave an overview of NIST Moving Forward:  Qualcomm presented contributions on:  Proposed requirements  Proposed architecture  Contributions on requirements, procedures and architecture were left open and will be discussed during the face-to-face meeting in March 2010  Member companies were asked to present additional contribution during this meeting
