2 VOCABULARY 1. piedmont - this word means “foot of the mountain”; rolling hills and beautiful valley inland from the coastal plains 2. barrier islands - long, low islands found along the shore line

3 3. wetlands - lands that at times are covered with water 4. Innner Coastal Plain- farther inland; slightly higher elevation than the Outer Coastal Plain

4 5. sea level - same height as the surface of the ocean 6. Myrtle Beach- Atlantic Coast resort city in South Carolina 7. fall line- a line of waterfalls between Piedmont and the Coastal Plains

5 8. Appalachia - an area in and around the Appalachian Mountains 9. elevation map - a map that shows how high land is 10. Outer Coastal Plain - land that is flat with a low elevation; inland from the shore

6 11. Florida Keys- chain of islands off the southern coast of Florida 12. hurricane - a violent storm that forms over the ocean 13. hurricane season- a time of year when hurricanes form; usually June to the end of November

7 14. key - a low island 15. Key West- an island off the southern coast of Florida 16. Three landforms found in the Southeast are plains, mountains, and rivers. (lakes)

8 17. How are barrier islands formed? Barrier islands form when melting glaciers caused sediment material to be deposited off the coast. As more and more sediment was deposited by water activity, the islands were formed.

9 18. How is the Inner Coastal Plain different from the Outer Coastal Plain? The Inner Coastal Plain is higher in elevation.

13 22. What are strong winds that move in a circular path along with heavy rains? Hurricanes 23. Hurricane season is from June to November in the Southeast.

14 24. Why did people build lighthouses along the coast of the Southeast? Along the Southeast coast, people built lighthouses to warn sailors of dangerous rocks and currents.

16 26. What are the purposes of lighthouses? a. Help sailors avoid rocky coastlines b. warn sailors about dangerous rocks and currents c. help sailors tell where they are
