CEOS Grid Task Team Yonsook Enloe, Allan Doyle, Ananth Rao Yonsook@harp.gsfc.nasa.gov March 8, 2005

Session Topics Grid Task Team Status – Yonsook – 15 min ESA Grid plus GridAssist – Ivan Petiteville – 35 min GMU – Liping Di – 20 min NASA LDCM Grid Project – McDonald – 10 min USGS – Stu Doescher – 10 min NOMADS – Glenn Rutledge – 15 min CNES– Paul Kopp – 10 min Chinese Grid Activities- G. 3 Grid Task Team Overview CEOS Grid Task Team started November 2002 Started with 6 Grid Application Projects. Now about a dozen projects/agencies are reporting on Grid activities at this meeting. Application Projects have widely differing applications areas Many issues are common to all application projects Task Team members work together on the common issues NASA lost funding to support Grid Task Team activities. Job opening : Grid Task Team leader. High pay! Great benefits!

Accomplishments Surmounted learning curve for Grid technologies –CEOS Grid Cookbook for installing Globus, GridFTP,... –CEOS Grid Toolkit – pointers to stable Grid software supported by CEOS Grid. Stability over bleeding edge.. –Firewall document –Called in Grid experts from IPG when needed Grid Testbed infrastructure monitoring using MapCenter prototype MDS (Monitoring & Discovery Service) resource directory for CEOS Grid prototyped Produced a CA Procedure document. CEOS Certificate Authority prototyped and CEOS certificates issued. Used Globus software and some modified IPG scripts. Can be used with all international partners

Accomplishments (cont) Catalog exploration – evaluated SRB/MCAT and MCS. Worked with MCS developers to put CEOS requirements for spatial and temporal searching into MCS 2.0. Workflow tools investigation. Completed a Workflow Tools Evaluation Report. Plans to use workflow tools to produce a set of CEOS Grid demos. Facilitated Application Projects extending scope of project by adding CEOS partners and access to CEOS agencies’ data and applications

Which Applications Best for Grid Back room capabilities – security, Grid FTP, things behind the scenes Enhanced location service transparency – user will not see the complex backend that mobilizes multiple computer and data resources Provide collaborative, virtual community environment; tight virtual enterprise or intranet. Grid probably not good for loosely coupled (in terms of common purpose), distributed sites. Distributed processing for on demand virtual products Large volume (or distributed sites) Data delivery Sharing of computing, data, and scientific algorithms. Compute intensive and large data volumes (scalability)

Future Work CEOS Grid testbed as an operating virtual organization –Who will take CEOS CA pre-operational or operational? –Maintain and operate MapCenter and MDS prototypes –Maintain CEOS Grid Toolkit Facilitate development of a set of “CEOS” Grid demos, mostly by using workflow tools –What can be considered a CEOS demo? Need to access at least one other CEOS partner’s data or applications –Documentation on website on some of the application projects data and resources Continue technology watch and technology exploration Initiate Global Grid Forum EO Research Group to meet at annual summer GGF Plenary meetings to provide CEOS agencies’ requirements to the Grid community. Craig Lee, area director of GGF Application Domains, is good resource for this. Explore support of international science programs
