LAS To WITSML Conversion Utility Presented at POSC Regional SIG meeting Stavanger, 13 -14 June 2006 by POSC & Satyam Computer Services Ltd

Agenda Project Objectives Problem Definition The Solution and Solution Architecture Technical Features & Limitations Demonstration Current Status & Future Contacts

Project Objectives To produce a tool to convert LAS log data to WITSML TM with interactive and batch interfaces To stimulate an Open Source development community around the WITSML initiative –Seed funding provided by BP –OS Community to be managed by WITSML and other POSC SIGs

LAS To WITSML - Problem Definition To develop a utility: For use by operators, contractors, and other organizations; For use by log analysts, petrophysicists and data managers. To convert existing log data from CWLS LAS 2.0 and 3 formats into WITSML™ wellLog data representation

Problem Definition Contd.. Use batch, scripted, and/or interactive user interface Address depth-based and time-based LAS structures The solution must be capable of running in a Windows XP operating system. Platform independent solutions are welcome.

Problem Definition Contd.. Should support identifying and confirming selected input data and saving output data under user-defined names in user-determined locations. The technology must generate WITSML log and wellLog object instances as well as other WITSML object instances needed to fully map the source data.

Problem Definition Contd.. The technology must be able to render the output data in a compatible LAS form using an XML style sheet. The technology must include samples of valid input data to verify correct operation and that data must pass the CWLS LAS validation process.

The Solution – Features Provided GUI based application– can handle single / multiple files for conversion. Easy–to–use. Very intuitive design to assist novice users Handles both Time based and Depth based LAS2.0 files. Developed and fully functional on Windows 2000 and Windows XP Operating systems. Uses Java technology that facilitates porting to other operating systems with much less effort.

The Solution – Features Provided Contd.. Offers flexibility to the user in choosing various optional data that needs to be converted / excluded from conversion. Generates WITSML Log and WellLog objects and other objects as required based on input data. Output is in the form of XML files that can be rendered in any desired form using the style sheets. Provision to the users to modify the mapping scheme between LAS and WITSML elements. Batch processing facility to process multiple files

Solution Architecture

Technical Features & Limitations The application Is fully functional on Windows 2000 / Windows XP Uses JRE 1.4.2_10 Desktop client application Flexibility to modify default mapping Open source standards Limitations At present handles only LAS 2.0 format

Demo of the Application Demonstration

Current Status and Future Current Status: –Application has been submitted to POSC for acceptance testing Future Scope of work: –Enhancements based on feedback from POSC & Industry We solicit the industry to provide feedback on the same so that the utility can be made more useful for the industry.
