2 Introduction: How to Engage Make College a Priority Identify Goals Early Engage by Disengaging Identify and Use Resources Engage in the College Community Time Management – Making Choices Relate Learning to Your Life

3 Make College a Priority List the reasons for attending college & choose actions based on these reasons. Make a commitment to yourself & “walk the walk.” Show up and engage each class session. Share your priority with others.

4 Identify Goals Early Explore and identify goals early. Seek the pathway to your goals. Keep open to expanded opportunities in goals. Be flexible and own your goals. Establish goalposts. Score!

5 Engage by Disengaging Disengage from distracting thoughts & responsibilities when in class or studying. Disengage by “unplugging” from technology not related to your academics. Disengage from social time during committed academic time. Set boundaries. Disengage from the negativity of others.

6 Identify & Use Resources Know your Resources Use your Resources Be Proactive -Get Help Early Refer to the Academic Resource List & Website Links

7 Engage in the College Community Network with fellow students. – Study Groups & Study Buddies – Mutual Support Systems –Share Resources – Student Government or Clubs – Socialize / Develop Friendships Engage your instructors. – Office hours – Field trips – Participate in Class Participate in campus events and programs.

8 Time Management – Making Choices Keep to a Routine Weekly Schedule Keep a planner for assignments, deadlines, and appointments to “project manage” your life. Record syllabi information into planner. Set weekly goals and prioritize college activities.

9 Relate Learning to your Life How does the learning relate to your goals? How does the learning relate to your current life? How does the learning relate to being the person you wish to be?

10 Summary Engagement is an pro-active process. “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” Will Rogers Make the college experience work for you in your life.
