1 INTERACTION: Living in the Global Village
Chapter 3

2 Types of Geographic Interaction
Interaction is the influence of people, places, and things on one another. Is daily Two different types of Interaction Area Interaction Connections people have with their surroundings Connections between places Environmental interaction Influences between people and the environment

3 Environmental Interaction
Types of Interaction Interaction Area Interaction Local Distant Environmental Interaction

4 Area Interaction: Local
Global scale Describes the types of connections made between different places People, products, and information move between places, they start influencing one another Fashion trends Local Scale Describes how people connect to the places around them, in their community and nieghbourhood Local plaza Parklands

5 Local Scale Neighbourhood Community
The region surrounding a person or place The more we know about our neighbourhood changes the way we think about it Mental maps – images of places we know Community Refers to a place where people live Can be district, town, or city Includes neighbourhood but goes beyond School is in the neighbourhood Workplace of a family member is farther away

6 Area Interaction - Distant
Involves people moving from place to place and also the exchange of information and products Because of technology, communication of knowledge and traveling farther made easier Journey that took days to complete can now be done in a matter of hours Developments in communication has had the effect of shrinking the distance between places.

7 The Global Village Accessibility describes how easy or difficult it is to interact with a place. Bridges make places more accessible Global Village is the result of improvements to transportation and communications systems. Worldwide interaction allows us to experience changing trends in music, fashion, and entertainment Makes us aware of the serious human and environmental problems the world faces

8 Environmental Interaction
People interact with the environment is part of a cause-effect relationship Climate factors such as temperatures, length of growing season and precipitation helps decide what crops grow in a particular area Oranges grown in Florida but not in Canada Wheat grown in Canada but not a common crop in Africa Relationship between climate and crops Climate is the cause, crop is the effect

9 Environment Affects People
Environment influences many human activities Ice hockey is a Canadian sport due to our cold winter temperatures World class skiers come from mountainous regions such as Austria, Switzerland, and northern Italy UK developed a strong navy because it is an island and water protects it from invasion Mountains provide protection from invasion, many countries have mountain ranges as their borders

10 People change the Environment
People change environment to suit their needs Create indoor environment that allows different activities. Built ice rinks to enjoy hockey in Florida People build dams and canals to protect their county from the North sea Green house to grow tomatoes (cause is the energy used to heat greenhouses and effect is the production of tomatoes)

11 Irrigation Project Gone Wrong
People change environment for better but find out that their effort was negative Irrigation is a system that takes water from one area and uses it in other areas Irrigation project in Turkmenistan Turkmenistan located in desert region of central Asia Kara Kum Canal carries water from the Amu River to irrigate cotton fields Irrigation made the dessert nation one of world’s largest producers of cotton

12 Irrigation Project (cont.)
Flow of water from Amu River into Aral Sea reduced Caused a drop in water level of Aral Sea Environmentalists fear that Aral Sea is drying up Become too salty that majority of fish are dead Causes fish industry in region to collapse Irrigation project created serious environmental problems Cause-effect relationships between human actions and their environmental effects were not fully understood
