Your Syllabus, Part 2 6 Pages of ISU-Mandatory Information, 5 Class Rules, 4 Pages Bridging the Highland-ISU Gap, 2 Pages on How To Study, 1 Page on How To Think, Things Which Were Lost That Should Not Be Forgotten, And “What Even Is Stats?”

Step 1 – Keep Your Syllabus Your college may want to see it. Seriously. Only show them the college part.

Step 2 – Read Your Syllabus If you seriously have not yet done this, then you seriously should. There is a quiz on it tomorrow. You might feel this is an abusive amount of reading, but in my mercy, I actually shortened the “Math is Music” article from 4 pages to just a single page.

Read Your Syllabus

Things That Were Lost That Should Not Have Been Forgotten The old syllabus format included information you probably should still have. T-S-T The 4 C’s The Question Words

The Website! http://highlandstatistics.pbworks.com There is no www on this. The primary part of the website that most of you will find useful is the PowerPoint Archive. I will sometimes post things on the website that I will not print out for you. In fact, I used nearly all of my photocopier clicks making yesterday’s treasure pile.

Speaking of Treasure I have totally legit treasure chests.

Calculators If you do not have a TI-83 or a TI-84, I recommend you get one. You will need a statistical graphing calculator. I have less than 1 classroom set, so I cannot check them out to every student who does not have one unless there are only a few of you. If you have a different calculator… congratulations! ◦ The requirement for that is simple – you will need to learn how to do things on your calculator using outside resources.

Calculators, Continued I will walk people directly through how to use their TI-83 and TI-84 calculators, which is the primary benefit. Also, I know they can do all the stuff we need. Students have successfully used NSpires. Students have also successfully used the Casio calculators which are running just under half the cost.

Calculators, Continued More Students have also broken down in tears trying to figure out their non-83/84 calculators. If you think the reduced hassle of an 83/84 is something you want, but cost is an issue, consider checking local pawn shops. You will not need your calculators until chapter 5 really, so the week of 9/14.

Amenities There are so many of them, it is crazy!

Textbooks You are expected to read this textbook! It will have a noticeable effect on your grade. These books are considered to be the most readable of the major AP Stats texts, and if you find it hard to believe, I have copies of the other industry standards so you can see for yourself. They still might be hard to read…but you should try anyway. Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.

Textbooks It is not only good practice for college-level reading, but if you read it before I present the material, you maximize the likelihood that you understand the material. If you read the material and it does not make sense, please consider e-mailing me or asking me questions. If you read it and it does not make sense, even though you tried, it could still be to your benefit when we discuss it.

My E-mail My e-mail is sanftho2@isu.edu You should e-mail me now. As in, seriously, if your phone does e-mail you can totally send that e-mail right now. Please make the subject AP Stats so it is easy to spot. Try to e-mail me within 24 hours.

But Why? I will be checking my e-mail compulsively for the next 24-48 hours, including my spam folder. I do not normally check it often. So if I can identify now any e-mails that would be spam later, I can save you the hassle so I will definitely get your e-mail later. Later when you need to hear back from me in a timely manner it may be too late for you, if you did not take the time now. This has bitten at least one student every year I have taught.

Classroom Rules Rule #1 is strictly enforced. I do not always enforce it outside of class. Rule #2 sometimes confuses students. What you need to know is that you do not have a right to be capricious, so you need to be careful when exercising your ability to be capricious. Rules #3, 4, and 5 are straightforward, I think, but if you have questions, ask.

Important Dates 9/10 – My Birthday 9/29 – Test 1 11/3 – Test 2 1/13 – Test 3 2/17 – Test 4 3/10 – Half Sanford Day 3/30 (Roughly) – Test 5 5/4 – The Final

Dual Enrollment We will have a full length presentation about this one of these days soon. Information you desperately need is basically mentioned on the high school syllabus, but if you have questions please feel free to ask them especially outside of class.

Your Projects It is worth your while to look over this section from the old syllabus format. We will discuss the projects in more detail as they get closer. They will require time outside of class, and you are required to work with a partner. If there is an odd number of students in a class, a single group of 3 will be permitted as opposed to a student who works alone.

You get a weighted grade 1 st trimester. You get a weighted grade 2 nd trimester. You get a weighted grade 3 rd trimester. If you are dual enrolled, you also get a single year-long grade reported to ISU. ◦ Not weighted If you take the AP Test, you get an AP score from 1 to 5. ◦ Many schools accept a 3, and several schools give you additional credit if you get a 4 instead. The Grades You Receive

I will drop your most damaging score which is not the final on your year-long ISU grade if you are dually enrolled. I will not drop anything on your first trimester. I will not drop anything on your second trimester. I will not drop anything on your third trimester. There has been confusion about this in the past. The Big Drop

There is an entirely separate PowerPoint for this. If there is time today, we will go over it. Late Work, Makeup, and Retakes

3 Big “Secrets” Secret 1 – Teachers are people too. ◦ In other words, it helps you out if I think good things about you…not because I am different than other teachers. I’m just honest about it. Secret 2 – This is not your only class. ◦ I try to keep that in mind even though some of your other teachers may not seem to know it. Secret 3 – Classes are not your only obligation. ◦ Sometimes real life and school obligations clash. If you are upfront and honest with me about it ahead of time, I am more likely to have options for cutting you some slack.

Discussion Time! What is statistics? The Transformation The Peanut

Questions Do you have any questions for me?
