1 Lego of my Graduate: Think, Value, Communicate & Lead Abstract The TVCL Matrix is a flexible solution for faculty to clearly state what an ECU student in a course, program or college should reflect in terms of thinking skills, values, effective communication and leadership. This work is intended to be a faculty driven process. The goal is to improve undergraduate student learning and the student experience by clearly setting expectations for courses or programs; documenting the achievement of course objectives towards programmatic student learning outcomes; and by documenting and disseminating student learning outcomes assessment data. Background Information As we, as an institution, mature in an authentic assessment process we realized a need for faculty development opportunities. Providing resources to help faculty clearly articulate essential core competencies they expect their students to attain was a impetus for this project. There was also a need to provide a venue for faculty driven conversations and the dissemination of ideas, which TVCL has begun to provide. Instructional Strategy Description Faculty come together and initially “build” an ECU student using Duplos. They are then asked to share their thoughts and the process they went through to construct a student. They are then asked to think about a course they teach and discuss how the content fits with the overall student. Only after this conversation are the four colors described and linked to each of the four core competencies: Think, Value, Communicate and Lead. Faculty use the discussion topics to construct a matrix that documents what a graduate from their program should exemplify in the four core competencies. This process allows instructors to see strengths and opportunity for improvement in the curriculum. The matrix also provides students with a way to reflect on their level of competency in each core. This aligns with UDL by promoting expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation and developing self-assessment and regulation. The intent of the matrix is to provide a venue for documentation and dissemination of what students are expected to learn. Fellowship groups all formed a Pirate CREW through College STAR. Next Steps Fellows will complete matrices, cases studies and present their work during faculty development session through the Office of Faculty Excellence. j Results and Lessons Learned TVCL Core Faculty have completed course, program and college level matrices that clearly articulate student attributes in the four core competencies. These have helped to document how course work accumulates to a degree for both faculty and students. Case studies have also been written to document the process followed by four different disciplines. These serve as exceptional examples to faculty across campus.
