1 High price for education
Can we save the Roman Empire???

2 Education in ancient Rome
In the ancient Roman Empire, children generally went to school at the age of about 7 years old, but it was different depending on who you were. Boys that could afford to go to school generally went longer than girls. Boys and girls also learned different things at school. Girls learned how to do things like weave, cook, and clean. Things that would help them be able to take care of a house when they were married. Girls in families that couldn’t afford school learned the same things, just at home. Boys that went to school learned how to read and write in Latin and Greek, do arithmetic, and public speaking. These skills were necessary in a government job. Only children in poor families did not go to school. Boys were allowed to vote and get a job at age 15.

3 Education in the u.s. Only 47% of full-time undergraduates go to a 4 year college with charges of less then $9,000 per year for tuition and fees. There are also ways that students can avoid paying for school, such as: Getting a full scholarship, which is when someone is awarded the amount of money for tuition and room and board which they do not have to pay. A partial scholarship is when a certain amount of money is awarded to someone so that they do not have to pay part of their tuition. Most scholarships are given out to people that excel at academics or sports. Grants are given to students that are very poor, where the government pays for part of the tuition and the student does not have to pay it back. Student loans are also given out by financial institutions.

4 Education in the u.s. (cont.)
Private school enrollment has been going down because it is harder for families to pay. In the 1960s, there were 5.2 million students attending catholic schools in the U.S. In the 1990s, there were 2.5 million students attending catholic schools in the U.S. Many college graduates are loaded in debt because they can’t pay back their student loans. At numerous private schools, officials are worried that enrollment will decrease further this fall. Heritage Academy Administrator and Principal, Dewitt Powell said the private school west of Hagerstown gave a family a 40% discount on tuition when the student’s dad got laid off. This discount will only last until the dad gets a job again.

5 From an expert Hannah B., Lillie P., Ben H., Lucy N., Ted B., and I interviewed Mr. Jackson, the super intendant, with our questions about the high price for education.

6 The interview answers In some cases, people lose their jobs because their employer can no longer afford it. Hopefully very few people in the Forest Hills School District will be cut this year. One way that we are trying to save money is when an employee retires or moves, we can do something differently so that we do not have to hire someone else in their place. If there are two small classes that are very similar, like German 4 and German 5 for example, we might combine the two classes so that we only need one person to teach that class, to save money. 85% of all the money that FHSD brings in goes to pay other employees. Some people think that cutting back on technology is a good idea to help save money. Personally, Mr. Jackson thinks we should use technology more and it can be helpful. While trying to save money, Mr. Jackson does not want anything to have a negative impact on students. One way to save money is to do things like not using as much school supplies as often. In our school/community only about 10% are living below the social economic level. In some schools/communities, about 70 0r 80% are living below the social economic level.

7 The interview answers (cont.)
In our school/community only about 10% are living below the social economic level. In some schools/communities, about 70 0r 80% are living below the social economic level. The state is cutting the funding's for our schools, but we do not know by how much yet. We are obviously hoping not a lot, but with the economy, it is not the best time to ask for more money. The Forest Hills Foundation for Education holds fund raisers like the Forest Hills 5K. Our district helps kids out in families without a lot of money. We can give them things like a sort of sport scholarship, and the PTA helps a lot too. On average, it takes about $10,000 to educate one student. This number includes everything– school buses, the gas, teachers, technology, and even the heating and electricity in the building. Our school district shops around for lower prices on products. We also buy in bulk, which is where we buy a large amount of a product and get a discount for it; being fiscally responsible. Some organizations give grants to schools.

8 This chart is based on a survey in which the results say that six in ten Americans say the average spent per student "seems like enough" money to provide an adequate education(Public Agenda, Online). The average during this time was seven to nine thousand dollars.

9 Can we save the ancient roman empire???

10 no If we had a time machine, I do not think that we would be able to go back and solve the problems of the Roman Empire. The U.S. has enough problems of its own already without even thinking about the ancient Roman Empire. Sure, we could definitely give them suggestions. Would they work? Who knows? It’s possible.
