Religious differences between various cultures & countries Protestants vs. Catholics: Began with Martin Luther in Germany in early 1500s Luther challenged the Pope’s authority & his power. Protestant Reformation: Luther’s supporters protested some of the Church’s practices and wanted to reform/change them. Religious divisions in Western Europe spread conflicts to the Americas as monarchs competed.

What religious goal did the French bring with them? What were Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet known for? Who achieved what Marquette & Joliet could not? Explain. The French made friends with the Indians, learning from them how to survive & make tools. Missionaries from France were determined to convert the Indians to Christianity. Reached the “Great River” but could not follow it to its end. Robert de LaSalle. He traveled the length of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.

Who was the Fr. king in 1660’s? How did he try to increase the French population in N. Am.? What happened as a result? Built forts along the Mississippi. One Fort, New Orleans, became a busy trading center. King ruled their gov’t directly: Colonists had little freedom; King appointed a dec.-making council. King Louis XIV (14 th ) Sent 1,000 farmers & some women; colonies grew slowly. Of the 10,000 Fr. settlers by 1680, only 1/3 lived on farms.

See if you can convert them to Cornell Notes by 9/21. For questions w/ LONG answers devise mnemonics. A Welches reward goes to any student who creates a great set of Cornell Notes for Section 5, 2 Welches if in a PP format.
