2 PCBO Overview for August 29, 20082 OVERVIEW  What is the Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Law?  This Law applies to all Electronic and Information Technology (E&IT) purchases over $15,000.

3 PCBO Overview for August 29, 20083 What is Accessible Technology  The CSU system has launched a system- wide Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) to ensure that each CSU campus follows state and federal laws mandating access to technology.  Accessibility for all is a priority at Cal State San Marcos. We are committed to providing an accessible and inclusive environment that enables all persons to be successful in attaining an education and information on or about our campus.

4 PCBO Overview for August 29, 20084 What is Section 508  Section 508 is part of the Rehabilitation Act Law, as amended in 1998 that requires access to electronic and information technology (E&IT). Technology must be accessible to employees and members of the public with disabilities to the extent it does not pose an “undue burden.” Section 508 is about creating an open door to information, including computers, software, and electronic office equipment.  Resource Link: http://www.calstate.edu/accessibility/section508/

Categories of E&IT Purchases:  Software application and operating systems  Web-based information and applications  Telecommunications products  Video and multimedia products  Self-contained, closed products like kiosks  Desktop and portable computers

Cont Rule of Thumb:  Is it electronic and/or does it fit in one of the E&IT categories?  Does it have a display and/or keypad that humans interact with?  Does that display have information about creating, converting, sending, receiving, or duplicating any sort of data or information?
