3 MEET DEPARTMENT CHAIR Discuss during 1 st semester… According to policy you need: - Promotion Policy & Manual, - Unit’s Promotion Criteria, - One or more mentor(s).

4 PLAN AHEAD - - Identify mentors. - Set mutual goals, evaluate annually. - Know where to publish in your field. - Get to know players in your field. - Work on good teaching practices. - Choose service commitments wisely.

5 GET TO KNOW YOUR TERRITORY - Learn culture of institution & department. - Establish connections within department. - Find out spoken and unspoken expectations of junior faculty. - Become familiar with tenure process. When I came up…

6 KNOW WHERE YOU STAND - Know why YOU were hired. - Ensure faculty understand your research. - Obtain annual reviews, be clear on their meaning. - Solicit honest input from your mentor & faculty in your research area.

7 SOME KEYS TO SUCCESS - Time management (block off time to work). - Develop independent research program (can be balance of own & team work). - Be proactive and take responsibility: contact mentors/Chair for meetings. - Request help: reading drafts, introductions to key people in field.

8 LEARN WHAT’S AVAILABLE Financial assistance: -RASAs, ADVANCE seed grants, Young Investigator Awards. Departmental support: - Reduced teaching & service loads. - TAs or RAs. - Funding for conferences. Tenure delay policies: - Automatic for childbirth/adoption. - Requests for personal/professional reasons.
