6 © 2008 - Cedric Saelens (Arteveldehogeschool) For the Tutor's guide we took into consideration the different functions a tutor fulfills in an open and distance learning situation with blended learning as context and guided, autonomous and collaborative learning as methods. The different functions are: materials developer, forum administrator, F2F sessions' manager, online coach... Guiding principles

7 © 2008 - Cedric Saelens (Arteveldehogeschool) For the Learner's guide we took into consideration what a new learner will need to know before starting one of the TOOL language courses and during the study of the course in order to make the most of the TOOL language courses. Guiding principles

Criteria

13 © 2008 - Cedric Saelens (Arteveldehogeschool) The F2F sessions: the tutor as real-time coach The primary objective of the F2F sessions is to look back on previous units, to give Learners an opportunity to exercise their spoken skills, to discuss common errors, to have Learners present their group and individual tasks. Of equal significance is the preparation for the unit that follows.

At the same time comprehension of spoken and written texts as well as speaking and writing are being improved. During F2F teaching more time is dedicated to activities for spoken interaction and spoken production – and there are several online activities that contain instructions on how to prepare for a particular dialogue or spoken production text. Some of these activities have to be carried out individually, others are based on interaction in pairs and groups or they require online communication. In addition, every unit includes some activities dedicated to self-reflection and learning to learn.  Types of TOOL course activities  Multiple Choice (true-false, multiple choice with multiple text or image options or with multiple media) Learner Guide

20 Learner orientation Face-to-face sessions (F2F) What to expect from your F2F sessions? The main objective of F2F sessions is to look back over previous units you have studied, practise your spoken skills and take part in group and individual presentations and discuss any common errors you may be making.
