1 ENGLISH IMMERSION FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF ENGLISH WELCOME!!

2 Main objectives of the immersion course The participants will: activate and improve their oral fluency update and expand their general English knowledge through dynamic and diverse activities with special emphasis on o formal and informal English o English in the classroom o slang and contemporary English o sharing teaching techniques

3 Emphasis on oral skills  Spoken production  Spoken interaction  Listening comprehension … through group and pairwork, and small group sessions.

4 Course requirements Final Project Give a mini-lessons (max. 15 min.) in groups of three in which you apply the language and skills practised in class. Reflective journal Write and turn in a journal (Memoria) reflecting on what you have learned and practised during the course and evaluating the experience.

7 Warm-up:  fun activities to start the day and get you into the right mood. Daily themes will include:  the English we learn and the English we teach  English in the street and in the media Small group 30-minute sessions: 3 students with 1 teacher  three 30-minute sessions  practise oral fluency Large group sessions: 12 students with 1 teacher  speaking skills, debate, discussion and exchange of ideas.  sharing experiences related to teaching End of the day  work on final project (mini-lesson) in groups of three  reflect on the day and make notes for the Reflective Journal

8 Sharing techniques and ideas for: classroom management (use of the space, discipline, decoration, desks, etc.) teaching the four skills; grammar and vocabulary using wikis and blogs, social networking, etc. warm-ups correction (types of mistakes and correction methodology and policy for speaking and writing) online resources PLN (personal learning networks) continuous professional development

9 The role of the Teachers and Language Assistants in the English Immersion Course In this course the classroom teachers and language assistants’ role is to facilitate and encourage conversation and communication. As a general rule she/he will make note of important or common errors and review them with the whole class at the end of different sessions. However, she/he will not interrupt communication to correct you.

10 Remember the emphasis is on oral fluency! You all have a lot of English grammar, vocabulary, rules of all kinds in your heads. Now it is time to put this knowledge to work! The main objective of these five days is to provide you with the opportunity to practice, practice, and then practice some more! English must be spoken all the time.
