AGENDA: 1.Literary criticism review: provide a brief summary of the three main types of literary criticism that we will use today. 2.Summary of “A Cup of Tea”: remind ourselves of the text that we read last week. 3.“A Cup of Tea” Literary Analysis: utilize the text to support your literary criticism-based conclusions on the short story. 4.College Research Essays: if you have not already done so, please submit your rough draft to me at the end of class.

3. Literary Criticism Review: On the back of the sheet provided when you walked into class, summarize each of the following types of literary criticism (provide a brief synopsis of the main characteristics): –Feminist criticism –Marxist criticism –Historical criticism

4. “A Cup of Tea” Summary: Below your summaries of the literary criticism, provide a brief (4-5 sentence) summary of “A Cup of Tea.” You may use the story and one another to help complete the summary. 7 th Period: We are a little behind (ack!) and must actually finish the story. Write a brief (2-3 sentence) summary of the beginning of the story, and we will then continue reading.

6. 7 th Period: We will begin reading at the top of page 4. As we read, you should look for ways in which we can apply Marxist and Feminist criticism. We will stop and chat as we go, and we will practice looking at the text and inferring what it really means.

7. “A Cup of Tea” Literary Criticism: Now it’s time for you to do some serious interpretive work. Just as we applied various schools of criticism to “The Giving Tree,” you are going to apply a specific type of literary criticism to Katherine Mansfield’s short story. Select one of the two following criticisms: feminist or Marxist. Identify 3 quotes that you can interpret using your literary criticism. Draw an overarching conclusion regarding your school of criticism and the text.
