8 What does it really mean to summarize? Rules to writing a really good summary 1.Include important ideas 2.Delete trivia 3.Delete repeated ideas 4.Collapse lists (WHAT IS THIS) 5.Choose or create a topic sentence

9 Rule 1-Include Important Ideas OBVIOUSLY, you know this, but when a reader interacts with a text, they have to determine what is important and to whom it is important. There are two types of what is important…Let’s illustrate with a little story called The House.

13 There are two types of important ideas. Textual Textual-this is what is important to the author!!! The text structure can help us figure this out. If it is organized in dates, those dates must be important etc… Text features can also help us figure out what is important. TEXTUAL DETAILS ARE WHAT YOU USE IN A SUMMARY!!!!!! Contextual Contextual-this is the part of the text you as a reader might connect to and you find interesting…interesting to you does NOT belong in a summary. 10:10 – 10:30

14 Rule 2-Delete Trivia Stick with the facts…well….stick with the facts that are about the main idea. In non-fiction there are lots of facts…but you only need to include the facts that tell about the main idea. Hint hint…this is why you have to know the main idea. The fact needs to be textual (important to the author) not contextual (important to you)
