2 Daniel Hernandez new board member Daniel Hernandez Jr. won 63% of the votes in the November 8 election for the Governing Board seat. Congratulations, Mr. Hernandez!

3 Eddie Islas named AHSAA Outstanding Administrator Eddie Islas, principal of Santa Clara Elementary School, was named an Outstanding Administrator by the Arizona Hispanic School Administrators Association. He was honored at the AHSAA annual conference Nov. 6-7, 2011.

4 Rodel Exemplary Recognition Nancy Chavez, a first-grade teacher at Esperanza Elementary School, has been named as one of 25 finalists for the 2012 Rodel Exemplary Teacher Award. John Robertson, principal of Craycroft Elementary School, has been named a semi-finalist in the Rodel Exemplary Principal Initiative.

5 Golden Bell Second Place for Project Graduation Project Graduation: The Digital Advantage will be named a runner-up in the High School Division of the Arizona School Boards Association’s Golden Bell Awards. The award will be announced December 15, 2011 at the ASBA annual conference.

6 One-to-One Deployments Complete Los Amigos fourth-graders received their laptop computers today, Nov. 22, 2011. This completes the 2011-12 one-to-one deployment of computers at SUSD elementary and middle schools.

7 Wellness Grants to SUSD Schools Craycroft, Elvira, Gallego, Liberty, Mission Manor, Rivera, Santa Clara and Summit View elementary schools each received $4,000 for Structured Recess from the Pima County Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant. Challenger Middle School received funding for an ENERGI system for a five-station total body workout system. Stations include a demonstration app and iPod Touch.

8 Recognition for Financial Reporting Excellence Sunnyside is one of five districts in Arizona recognized by the Association of School Business Officials International that have participated in the Certificate of Excellence program for 25 years. This award program recognizes high-quality financial reporting to the community through exceptional Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports.

9 6 th Grade Students go online One-to-one students are taking the opportunity to work online at the schools’ Internet Cafes.

10 Digital explorers, innovators, scholars online at Valencia Library The Valencia Library is a hot spot to be on Saturday afternoons for Sunnyside District students. They take their laptops to the library to take advantage of the library’s Wi-Fi.

11 SHS alum Joe Solorio in Nat’l Wrestling Hall of Fame Sunnyside High alum Joe Solorio, Class of 1977, was inducted Nov. 6 into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was a state wrestling champion at Sunnyside, NJCAA Man of the Year in 2000, and 2002 NJCAA Wrestling Coach of the Year at Pima Community College. Joe Solorio with Don Klostreich, Joe’s coach at Sunnyside and a former Hall of Fame inductee.
