2 Discussion Have you ever been in a life-threatening situation? Imagine you that you are on a plane, and it crashes in the snowy mountains, far away from a town or village (people). There is no satellite reception. You and others survive the crash, but you don’t know if anyone is coming to help.  What would you do first when getting out of the plane?  What will you eat?  How will you survive the weather?  How will you find someone to rescue you?

4 Pre-Reading Skills After predicting, read your questions before looking at the reading. 1. Gist: main idea (use titles, subtitles, first paragraph) 2. Detail: read all the choices and look for key words 3. Main idea: (look for topic sentences) 4. Inference/Paraphrase: not directly stated – use overall idea 5. Vocabulary/Reference: read entire sentence with key word

5 Vocabulary in Context Go back and read more completely to determine vocabulary words Check with a partner

6 Unit 9A Vocabulary endure- v. to tolerate; to survive aircraft- n airplane, or helicopter; any flying vessel blanket - n. cloth to cover yourself; to keep warm rescue- n. ambulance, hospital workers volunteer- v. to help to do something, for a cause

10 Homework: Reading Journal #8 Type one paragraph (4-5 sentences) on the following topic: -- due 11/12 before class (Wednesday)  In the case of an accident on a plane, boat, bus (or any other form of transportation), does the pilot/captain/driver have responsibility to save the people first or him/herself first? Why do you think so? Remember! You should use at least 3 new vocabulary words (from Unit A or Unit B) in your responses. Please underline these words in your response so you can make sure you included them.
