Why CFI became a partner? Joined the partnership in March 2005 Purpose – to become part of the long- term solution toward reducing emissions and improving fuel economy. SmartWay provides guidance and insight into new technologies that are tested and proven to produce results.

Why CFI became a partner? (continued) CFI views the SmartWay program as an excellent benchmarking tool to measure our continual improvement in meeting emission goals, improving fuel economy and holding costs in line. CFI became ISO 9002 certified in February 1995 and views the benefits of SmartWay to be similar with those of ISO Certification.

What has CFI done as a Partner? Converted our entire tractor fleet to Wide Base Tire Technology.

Trailers also being converted to Wide Base Tires

Advantages of Wide Base Tires Improved Fuel Mileage by 2/10’s of a mile per gallon & an additional 2/10’s for the trailer. Cooler brakes due to more air moving around the exposed drum = longer brake life and better stopping. Easier tire pressure checking with no inside valve stem to find.

Advantages of Wide Base Tires (continued) Fewer tires & wheels to manage as our fleet converts from 18-Wheelers to 10- Wheelers. Drivers can visually see a low tire and do something about it before it’s too late.

What has CFI done as a Partner? (continued) Began specifying bunk heaters in all new trucks as of November 2005 and currently have over 50% of our fleet equipped. Continued to equip our tractors with the full air and cab fairings and aerodynamic mirror shells.

What has CFI done as a Partner? (continued) 2004 thru 2006 – Upgraded the entire fleet of 2,400 tractors equipped with post October 2002 EPA certified engines. Testing of various Auxiliary Power Units (APU’s).

What has CFI done as a Partner? (continued) Participated in field testing 2007 Engine technology with both Caterpillar and Cummins. Idle reduction campaign at our Joplin Corporate Headquarters, designating no-idling tractor parking and daily yard checks to identify unnecessary idling.

No Idle Designated Parking

What has CFI done as a Partner? (continued) Participated in the EPA SmartWay events across the country to help develop no-idling guidelines for States & Municipalities to adopt. Participated in the EPA’s signing of an agreement with the Natural Resources Canada FleetSmart program. (Canada’s twin to the U.S. SmartWay program.

Accomplishments to Date Reduced CO2 by 366,583 tons Reduced NOX by 118 tons Reduced PM (particulate matter) by 3.16 tons Data Source: EPA SmartWay Program

Future Plans with SmartWay Implementing electric source cab/sleeper cooling on tractors to further reduce idling thru the use of Kenworth’s Clean Power System. (estimated release date of June 2007) Possibly electrifying CFI’s new Kansas City drop lot to allow such vehicles to plug in for overnight stays.
