The Guelph Vineyard Love God. Love People. Lives Transformed. Spiritual Warfare V– Recap Recap 1. Like it or not we exist in a Spiritual Conflict. 2. The conflict started (Genesis 3) not with Adam and Eve being overpowered fight but with deception! (John 8:32) 3. Major deception is the we see ourselves as King not God. 4. Forgotten our Mission –Make disciples and Rescue the lost and Reconcile them to Jesus. (Matthew 28:16-20) 5. Just as Jesus left His Spirit with His disciples so he has left his Spirit with us ensuring we go about the task with His presence in us! (Colossian 1:27)

The Guelph Vineyard Love God. Love People. Lives Transformed. Spiritual Warfare V– Recap 6.The enemy’s intention is to always draw us into sin because sin separates us from relationship with God who is the source of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17) 7.Repentance and forgiveness are most critical elements of breaking the enemy’s power because they restore us into relationship with our loving heavenly father and remove the enemy’s right of accusation. 8.Oppression or Demonization is not demonic “possession” but means “under the influence of” Temptation, Sin or Sin against us FootholdHandholdStronghold

The Guelph Vineyard Love God. Love People. Lives Transformed. Spiritual Warfare V– Demonic Oppression How do we get delivered? Be Humble Be Honest Confess our Sin (1John 1:9) Repent of our Sins Break with Sinful, relationships, practices, behaviors Forgiveness towards others Temptation, Sin or Sins against us FootholdHandholdStronghold Forgiveness Confession & Repentance Relationally invite God into the Freedom Journey

The Guelph Vineyard Love God. Love People. Lives Transformed. Spiritual Warfare V– Demonic Oppression Why are some “not delivered” Lack of Confession & Repentance Lack of Forgiveness Self Centeredness – Desire for attention Not Separated by the waters of Baptism Part of a larger Battle – Need corporate support

The Guelph Vineyard Living a Life of Repentance Biblical Picture John the Baptist – Mk 1:1-4 Jesus –Mk 1:15 “repent & believe” –Lk 13:2-5 “repent or perish” –Lk 24:46,47 “repentance for forgiveness of sins” Early Church –Ac 2:36-38 “repent…be baptized” –Ac 17:30 “all men everywhere should repent” –Ac 20:20:21 “repentance toward God and faith in Christ” –Rev 3:3 “remember what you’ve received, keep it and repent –Rev 3:19 “those I love, I reprove; be zealous therefore and repent”

The Guelph Vineyard Living a Life of Repentance Meaning of Repentance Metanoia (Gk) “change your mind” Hebrew “to turn” or “to return” Change from: –Thinking a certain way; living a certain way –Certain standards; patterns of behaviour; habitual reactions Instead of embracing these ways of thinking, reacting, behaving: –You make a decision to stop them; lay them down; see things differently; accept God’s standards ATTITUDE followed by a DECISION that leads to ACTION

The Guelph Vineyard Living a Life of Repentance Why repentance is needed God being God offends human pride. Repentance lays down our pride. Our condition –We are lost (we’re going the wrong way, headed in the wrong direction) Not just about destination It’s a condition of our soul apart from God

The Guelph Vineyard Living a Life of Repentance Attitude of a Repentant Mind Recognizes that “I am not God” –God is in charge: my Loving Father who loves me –His will is supreme Submits it’s thoughts & feelings to God daily –Recognizes “I could be wrong” Is open to correction from God and from others –Is not defensive, proud, stubborn, –Doesn’t argue with God Chooses right actions in spite of thought and feelings –Receives the word (Jam 1:21) in humility
