Move On with a National Qualification Skills for Life is the national strategy for improving adult literacy and numeracy skills. Move On is the strand within Skills for Life that focuses on people improving their literacy and numeracy skills to Level 1 and Level 2 and gaining a national qualification. Move On challenges the notion that widening participation in learning is best achieved by hiding basic skills provision in other activities. It offers a direct approach to promotion, recruitment and delivery.

What is the Move On approach? Promotion: A positive sell, offering the national qualifications in English and maths, Do you need English or maths qualifications to Move On? rather than a deficit: Have you got problems with your reading, writing and maths? Recruitment: Engages and trains referrers in the community, in education and in the workplace - Get On at work - who have frequent contact with potential learners. Delivery: A focused learning opportunity for people who wouldnt usually see themselves as basic skills learners, who have either no or only limited qualifications in English and maths.

Move On offers learners: free skills check/test taster free short course with ILP strand 1 strand 2 prep. to pass the test wider skills development, with lots of practice tests own focus free National Test entry advice on opportunities to build on their success and progress to other courses

About the National Tests The tests are pitched at the same level as GCSE maths or English. They are shorter and more focused on the skills required for work and life generally. They tell you what level you are at, not what you have covered in a two-year course. They prepare you for the next step. The National Tests in Adult Literacy and Numeracy are like the theory driving test, which checks whether you have got the skills and knowledge you need to support the practical application of driving. One supports the other, and you need both theory and applied skills to be successful. People go on improving their skills after they have passed.

What are the National Tests like? Short (1 hr literacy, 1¼ hr numeracy) and accessible Multiple-choice like the driving theory test Available monthly and weekly on paper and on screen Based on everyday subjects, e.g. home or work First generation of tests Try the practice tests on www.move-on.org.uk and on the CD-ROM in File 3 of the Move On with awww.move-on.org.uk National Qualification Toolkit.

Positive language activity Have you got a problem with reading, writing and number skills? Would you like to brush up your English and/or maths skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification?

Motivating potential learners Simple promotion/screening: have you got a GCSE English or maths? If not, your CV has a gap; this is your opportunity to fill it. You can modernise your skills by getting a national adult English and maths qualification. While youre doing a qualification, you can get a second one for free. A stepping stone to a range of other learning opportunities. An introductory session – to see if you like it.

Skills practice Work in groups of three: One person plays the role of adviser/teacher/trainer/ULR etc. One person plays the prospective learner/trainee. One person observes and records useful techniques and phrases.

Skills practice (continued) 1Agree who will take each role. 2The person playing the adviser (or similar) describes their work situation and the kind of prospective learner they work with. (Five minutes.) 3Practise a conversation to invite and encourage a learner to take a National Certificate. (Five minutes.) 4Give feedback within the group. (Five minutes.) -How did it feel to be in this role? -What worked well? -What might have worked better? 5Observers give feedback to whole group. (Five minutes.)
