VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 1 Introduction VELO overview Overall planning A bit of (recent) history A look ahead

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 2 VELO overview ~1 m module support CO 2 cooling detector "hood" kapton cables Vacuum vessel repeater electronics LHC collision point8 « RF box » Home-made rectangular bellows VELO exit window Silicon modules Wake field suppressor

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 3 VELO installation and commissioning: strategy two parallel activities Install detectors after bake-out (& sector test) Global LHCb commissioning (starts nov 2006!) Install vacuum/mechanics at IP8 Vacuum continuity for LHC, bake out Commission vacuum and positioning systems "POINT8" now Assemble/commission detectors and electronics outside IP8 Test beam run, rec. s/w, alignment... "Alignment Challenge & Detector Commissioning" "ACDC" now jan 2007

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 4 VELO installation and commissioning: schedule excerpt v6.0 install detector halves in vessel:january 2007 ACDC-1 ACDC-2a ACDC-2b VELO detector commissioning "ACDC" all modules for detector half must be avai- lable 3 months before going to a test beam run test beam test beam 25ns Considerable resources from other LHCb groups (such as Online and Infra- structure) is being diverted to ACDC support

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 5 From EDR to PRR (1) Module EDR report: Answers from the VELO group: in red boxes, text by the referees in blue boxes, text by VELO group

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 6 From EDR to PRR (2)... EDR referees' statements

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 7 From EDR to PRR (3) since then, another 3 (to 4 ?) months slipping VELO group's answer EDR referees' statement

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 8 PRR prerequisites VELO group's answer EDR referees' statements

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 9 Most recent history ~dec'05 - jan'06 Because of further slipping of PRR target date, it was decided to allow parallelizing the development of the module assembly procedure: –produce 4 mechanical modules up to specs (geometry) –produce 3 electrical (two-sided) hybrids up to specs (eletrically) –start PRR with these achievements and finish the review process with full electrical module tests within a couple of weeks after the PRR (follow-up meeting with referees). This does not free us from making 3-5 full modules and having them fully qualified (in vacuum, under bias, cooled) before starting production. involves some components wastage

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 10 Recent LHCC comprehensive review Slides at http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=741http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=741 From LHCb Spokesperson's email summary: Concerns are expressed for the silicon detectors, i.e. IT, TT and VELO; being late significantly. Since their module production is not reaching to the state of real serial production yet, they find it difficult to assess whether the claimed milestones can indeed be reached. […] They have noted the very tight schedules for the production of VELO RF-box and Kapton cables […].

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 11 Review goals of this review Given that prerequisites for PRR are not met, Aim at –reviewing inventory of steps that are yet to be taken for achieving the PRR prerequisites –review estimates of time required for each step –review resources allocated for these steps –review inventory of components (with QA flags) –agree on a plan toward PRR finalization and a framework for continuous monitoring until PRR finalization paralell processing: discover all (yet unraveled) issues! e.g.: finalize a complete module (even if not up to specs) and operate it in vacuum system, with cooling and power + bias. –in particular, agree on a list of measurements/graphs that ought to be produced for demonstrating that PRR prerequisites are achieved

VELO Module PRR preparation meeting28-feb-2006 LiverpoolMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 12 Look ahead Finalize PRR process by March 31 Achieve full production speed by week 17 (2 modules / week) –week of 24 to 28 of April May 15: more than 5 modules mounted on Right detector half
