Combining Like Terms

Vocabulary!  Like can mean different things in English. ex. I like to read a book every night before I go to bed. ex. Julia has 400 dollars. Does anyone here have a like amount? * “Like” in this sentence means “the same.”

Vocabulary!  An algebraic term consists of: sign (positive or negative) coefficient variable exponent  Coefficient – the number before the variable. It tells you how many of that variable there are. -3x 2 4x10x 2 -x (the coefficient is1)

What does it mean to be LIKE TERMS? Like Terms NOT Like Terms  -3 and 8  6x and 15x  12x and -4x  -3x 2 and 9x 2  -x and 3x 2  -2x and -4x 2  6 and 3x  9x 2 and 12 Like terms are terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. Discuss: Are 3ab and -2ba like terms?

Identify the like terms.  -x 2 + 5x – 4 – 3x + 2 -x 2 + 5x – 4 – 3x + 2 5x and -3x are like terms. -4 and +2 are also like terms.  -5x 2 – x + 8 + 6x -10  -3x 2 + 2x + x 2 - 4 + 7x

You can simplify an expression by combining like terms. a) 8x + 3x 8x + 3x = (8+3)x = 11x b) 2y 2 + 5 + 7y 2 – y 2 2y 2 + 7y 2 – y 2 + 5 = (2+7-1)y 2 + 5 = 8y 2 + 5

Let’s try together… a) 8m - 5 - m - 3m a) 2x 2 + 5x - 8x 2 b) 7ab – 3bc + 2ba

Now you try… a) 5x - 3 + x b) 10x 2 + 5x – 4 - 18x 2 c) - 4ab – 8b + 10ba d) 15n 2 – 10n 2 + 3m 2 +12n

Now you try… a) 4(m + 6) - 10 b) 8a – 2a(a + 6) c) 6(m + 1) – 3(m + 2) d) t(t – 5) – 4(t – 5)

Now you try… a) 4(m + 6) - 10 b) 8a – 2a(a + 6) c) 6(m + 1) – 3(m + 2) d) t(t – 5) – 4(t – 5) 4m + 14 -2a 2 – 4a 3m t 2 – 9t + 20

Journal Can you write 2 different expressions that will simplify to each expression below? Prove that you are correct. 1. ( ) + ( ) = -3a 2 - 5a + 4 2. ( ) + ( ) = ½x - 12 3. ( ) + ( ) = -5xy + 3yz
