3 WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An Apprenticeship is a job with training. You can progress up the qualification ladder whilst you work. The qualifications you gain are equivalent to those you could get from a full time college course and you will be getting paid as you learn. 4 WHAT IS A TRAINEESHIP? Traineeships prepare you for work or an Apprenticeship if you need to improve your qualifications and skills. They last between 6 weeks and 6 months. To do a Traineeship you need to be in one of the following groups:  out of work with little work experience  working for less than 16 hours a week  leaving school/college  finding it hard to get an Apprenticeship  not sure you have the skills for an Apprenticeship Find out more about traineeships at: 4 © Bournemouth & Poole College 2015

5 CHALLENGING GENDER STEREOTYPES 5 ‘Gender Stereotypes’ are commonly held beliefs that certain jobs are better for girls while others are better for boys. These views are based on values, beliefs and attitudes learned as we grow up and reinforced by inequality and distorted gender representation within career sectors. Typical examples could include more males in construction and more females in caring professions. It is important that we challenge our views on gender stereotyping by asking: Why should a job be more suitable for a male or female? How can we overcome barriers that perpetuate gender inequality in careers? Bournemouth & Poole College has produced a video in which young people talk about their attitudes to gender stereotyping in jobs and how doing an apprenticeship has helped them to move forward with their career plans. The message is clear, if you are interested in a particular career just: © Bournemouth & Poole College 2015

6 CHALLENGING GENDER STEREOTYPES 6 Overcoming gender stereotyping in careers: Challenge how you or others have developed assumptions about male and female job roles Use careers information to look at what specific jobs involve (e.g. interests, skills, abilities, qualifications etc.) and make informed decisions based on who you are and what you would like to do Find information and support to help you develop your interests. This could include doing work experience, college shadowing days, enterprise initiatives, attending conferences etc Seek out positive role models in the career you are considering and ask if they would ‘mentor’ you Look at labour market information to see what the balance of male to female employees is. If there is a gender imbalance look at links to ‘Professional Bodies’ to see how this is being addressed through information and initiatives. (e.g. see information given within the National Careers Service Job Profiles under ‘More Information’, ‘Opportunities’ and ‘Job Market Information’ sections) By doing an apprenticeship or vocational course you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and abilities to show you are the right person for the job irrespective of your gender © Bournemouth & Poole College 2015
