Traffic Information Analysis of Capabilities and associated Data Models

Traffic Technology Strategy (PA Consulting, January 2008) Strategic Preparation of the Network NETWORK OPERATOR CAPABILITIES Collecting and Disseminating Information Traffic Operations Roadworks and pre-planned event management Demand Management Network Resilience Collecting & Disseminating traveller traffic information Collecting & Dissemination operational information Traffic Management Incident Management

A High Level Capability Map from EA Modelling Guidelines (derived from Microsoft Motion Method and HA’s TT Strategy) 1.Develop the network 2.Plan and manage the network 3.Collect information 4. Disseminate information 5.Collaborate A. CustomersB. Customer Facing Channel Partners F. Infrastructure & Compliance Government: OGD’s, DfT, EU E. Financial Providers (Treasury, PFI) C. Suppliers D. Other Partners

Layers of Transportation Data (Source: ArcGIS UNETRANS Data Model) The Events Layer – contains objects such as vehicles moving across the network. The Routing Layer – contains more complex features such as “No exit”, e.g. at the intersection of a bridge and tunnel. The Reference Network Layer – contains all of the base road data. This data has a linear spatial representation and has an underlying topological structure that defines the connectivity and adjacency of links in the road network.

Conclusions (1) The HA’s Business Capabilities as a Network Operator are essentially: The collection and dissemination of data Strategic Preparation of the Network Roadworks and pre-planned event management Demand Management Network Resilience Traffic Operations Traffic Management Incident Management

Conclusions (2) The Traffic Information Architecture (Capabilities) comprises: The Unified Road Network Model The Reference Network Layer, and The Routing Features Layer The National State of the Road Network The Events Layer The Technical Architecture (Capabilities) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Complex Event Processing (CEP) Real-time Publish & Subscribe (ESB)

EARM Context

Traffic Information POTI’s Process – to be defined Organisation – to be defined Technologies: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Event-Driven Architecture (EDA)/Complex Event Processing (CEP) Real-time Publish & Subscribe (ESB) Information: Unified Road Network Model National State of the Road Network
