1 Routing Routing in an internetwork is the process of directing the transmission of data across two connected networks. Bridges seem to do this function as they route data from one network to a destination host on another network, but this type of routing is based solely on the Link Layer address (layer 2). The bridge does not need to understand TCP/IP networking, just as long as it understands the network protocol being used. Routers and gateways (terms often used interchangeably) connect networks of different types at at the Network Layer (layer 3).
