2 Motor Vehicle Crashes = Leading Cause of Death (Ages 1-34) 93% of deaths are a result of driver behavior 34% are due to road factors 12% are a result of the driver’s vehicle Combination of these factors contribute to crashes.

3 Basic Behavioral Strategies Pairing education with enforcement – Education alone will not change behavior – Enforcement alone will not change behavior for very long “Popular” choices are often not effective – Improve driver’s education – Public information campaigns – Handouts and give-aways Enforcement Tools Laws

4 Programs through Office of Traffic Safety Safe and Sober- (aggressive overtime traffic safety enforcement) HEAT (High Enforcement of Aggressive/Speed Traffic) TZD Safe Roads (Safe Communities Coalitions) Night CAP (Concentrated Alcohol Patrol) DWI Courts and Court Monitoring Alternative Rides Home Communications tools – publicizing enforcement with news releases, media kits, posters Worksite policies or trainings – server training – policies on texting/cell phone use/speeding/seatbelts/alcohol
