Paraphrasing, Summarizing, Quoting Before using source material in your writing: 1.Find and get source material. 2.Evaluate the quality and relevance. 3.Read the information and decide what you want to use to support your arguments. If the information you want to use is cited from another source, try to track down that other source. 4.Read it well enough that you understand the content. 5.Take note of the bibliographic information. 6.Turn the source over and write notes on what you have read and understood without looking at the original. Remember: If you lose track of the source of the information you want to use, you cannot use that information

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Using source material Order of importance (which to use more): 1.Paraphrasing 2.Summarizing 3.Quoting Good paraphrasing and summarizing show that you understand. Quoting just proves you can copy.

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Using source material When using information from a source, it is best to introduce it with a phrase that shows it is not your own idea. One article indicates… According to…, Smith claims… In conducting the research, the author finds that… Don’t forget to cite! Remember that every time you use source material, you need a reference both in the text and in the bibliography.

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Using source material Verb tenses: Use PRESENT TENSE when discussing the literature or the author’s statements: o Jackson et al state… o The article explains... Use PAST TENSE When writing about the actions of the authors or researchers: o Samuel and Cohen conducted a survey… When discussing ideas that are no longer true: o Silverman thought that this was because of a tumor, but James later discovered the neurological cause.

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Summarizing A summary is a shortened version of the main ideas from an original source. It does not provide details. It is written by using different words to describe the content of the original. Tips Read the introduction and conclusion to get the main ideas Look at the subtitles to determine what the main sections are

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Summarizing Exercise: Think of the last movie you saw, then answer in complete sentences. o What kind of movie was it (action, romance…)? o What was it about? Was there more than one storyline? o To whom would you recommend seeing it? Read this article. What is it about?article

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is more specific than summarizing, because it focuses on only a small section of the original. It is written by explaining that section in different words. Tips Start by reading the original closely to make sure you understand it well. Turn over the original and explain what you have read. Only use the original to fact-check (make sure the information is correct). DO NOT follow the original and just change some of the words.

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Paraphrasing Exercise: Think again of the last movie you saw. o What was your favourite scene? Why was it your favourite? o What was the worst scene? Why? Go back to the article.article o What percentage of foreign nurses are working in Qatar? (Answer in a complete sentence.) o Which Middle Eastern country has been most successful in creating a positive image of the nurse? Why? (Answer in complete sentences.)

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Quoting A quotation is an exact reproduction of a section from an original text, spelling and punctuation included. Tips A quotation is used to support what you want to say, not to say it for you. Try to use quotes only when the original text cannot be reworded. A quote must be presented in a grammatically correct fashion. If you are using only part of sentence, you must build the rest of the sentence around it to make it complete. Use … to show that you have cut something out of the quote. Use [ ] to show that you have made a change in a quote (changed a verb tense, used a noun instead of a pronoun). Never change the meaning of a quote.

www.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellnesswww.qatar.ucalgary.caEnriching Qatar Health and Wellness Quoting Exercise: What is the best line you can remember from a movie you saw? Who said it? Go back to the article.article o How many quotes are used in the article? o Fill in the blanks: _________ explains that, in terms of education, all Arab countries develop their own education systems “while add quoted information about how the systems are similar” (_____, p.S1-88).
