Phoenix Convention Center Phoenix, Arizona Army’s Net Zero Initiative Sustainability Getting to Net Zero: Energy, Water and Waste Alicen Kandt National Renewable Energy Laboratory August 12, 2015

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Complexities of Net Zero Water, Energy, and Waste Water, energy, and waste are interconnected in complicated ways Energy requires water to produce Water requires energy to treat and transport Waste requires energy to transport and can be used to create energy

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade 1.To produce as much energy on-site as they use annually; 2.To limit the consumption of freshwater resources and return water back to the same watershed so as not to deplete the groundwater and surface water resources of that region in quantity or quality; and/or 3.To reduce, reuse, and recover solid waste streams by converting them to resource values with zero solid waste to landfill. 3 Army Net Zero Initiative

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). DOE labs, including the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and the Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL), are providing direct support to Army Net Zero Pilot Installations. 4 Collaboration

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade 15 Baseline/Balance Waste Fort Carson Mattress Recycling (PDF 344 KB) Working with a local recycler, Fort Carson no longer sends any of its mattresses to a landfill. All mattresses are taken to the recycler at no cost, and the recycler ensures all materials are recycled, re-used, and or re- purposed. Fort Carson Mattress Recycling Joint Base Lewis-McChord Composting Facility (PDF 347 KB) Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is turning organic waste resources into valuable landscaping and soil amendment products. Joint Base Lewis-McChord Composting Facility Fort Polk Battery Reuse (PDF 285 KB) Seeing an opportunity to reduce battery expenditures, waste disposal costs and potential injury to soldiers, JRTC and Fort Polk personnel developed a program for the turn-in, testing and re-issue of these batteries. Fort Polk Battery Reuse Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) Concrete and Asphalt Recycling Success Story (PDF 192.01 KB) A one-page fact sheet about concrete and asphalt recycling at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) Concrete and Asphalt Recycling Success Story

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Energy: – Conduct thermal building envelope analysis – Reduce energy use through energy management control systems – Hire resource efficiency managers – Pursue alternative financing mechanisms – Conduct energy master planning Water: – Maximize the use of xeriscaping – Implement leak detection on the potable water distribution system – Maximize water recycling – Install purple pipe – Maximize use of alternate water sources 16 Best Practices Identified

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Waste: – Establish a Qualified Recycling Program – Characterize and quantify waste flows – Improve purchasing practices to reduce waste at the source – Repurpose and reuse waste through free and low- cost opportunities – Recycle and compost waste through free and low- cost opportunities 17 Best Practices Identified

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Expand Net Zero guidelines across the board domestically Plans for extending Net Zero energy, waste, and water resource concepts to overseas facilities. – Including equipment and strategies for temporary forward operating bases and mobile maneuvers as well as permanent stationary facilities. 18 What’s Next? http://cleantechnica.com/2014/11/05/ct-exclusive-interview-army-net-zero-soldiers/
