Verify that the documentation above has been delivered to our office. While it has not been enforced in the past, students are to enroll in RHB 770 for two semesters for credit and are required to participate in subsequent seminars for zero credits. This is an expectation that faculty have raised on several occasions and is being included in this evaluation.

University Requirements for a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy “The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is conferred upon a candidate who, after completing graduate work devoted to study of a special field of knowledge,

1) passes comprehensive examinations in the chosen field and the dissertation subject, 2) presents a satisfactory dissertation, and 3)shows evidence of scholarly attainment.” (University of Kentucky, The Graduate School, Bulletin, Fall 2006, http://www.research.uky.edu/gs/bulletin/http://www.research.uky.edu/gs/bulletin/ current/AdvancedDegrees.shtml )

Research Apprenticeship Three different research apprenticeships are required (9 credits minimum, need not be 3 credits each) -One outside the student’s discipline -One with one of the student’s committee chairs

Time to Qualifying Examination Graduate School Council has voted to limit time to Qualifying Examination to 5 years for students starting Fall 2005 & after: –One year extension may be obtained from the Dean of the Graduate School (this should be easy to obtain, but anything more than one year will be very difficult)

Qualifying Examination The student’s Advisory Committee, following program faculty recommendations, will develop the examination. Will include closed book in-house section, open book off campus section and oral defense.

Dissertation Students entering after Fall 2005 enroll in a 2 credit hour RHB 767 Dissertation Residency Credit every fall and spring semester until they have completed and defended their dissertation. Student has 5 years, following the semester of successful completion of the comprehensive examination, to complete all degree requirements.

General Reminders Take into consideration what you want to accomplish, what academic sources are going to strengthen your needs as doctoral student

General Reminders What do you need to do to create your research experiences and develop your research experiences? What are you going to study? What do you need to know and do (technically) to get to that point?

General Reminders You need to schedule a committee meeting with your Advisory committee before you complete 18 hours. When you are approved to schedule an oral comprehensive examination, you need to process this via The Graduate School Page (Ask DGS to clarify)
