Endoplasm Reticulum By Gabe Mukobi, Will Schultz, Ryan Behnke, Ben Cooke and Wes Colvin!

The Basics  There are two types of ER: the rough ER and the smooth ER  Both of these types of organelles have the same membranes, but have different structures and serve different purposes in the cell  Together, these organelles form a connected network of tubules, vesicles, and cisternae  The Endoplasmic Reticulum mainly serves as a packaging system for proteins, ions, and steroids  The ER works closely with the Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, RNA, mRNA, and tRNA WILL

Where In the Cell  The Endoplasmic reticulum is located near the center of the cell  The ER is physically attached to the cytoplasmic face of the nuclear envelope and protrudes into the cytoplasm Ben

What does the Endoplasm Reticulum do?  The rough ER has ribosomes attached that synthesize proteins  These proteins are used to build the cell membrane  The smooth ER is mainly in charge of synthesizing, storing and transporting lipids as well as breaking down toxic materials to be sent to the Golgi apparatus Will

How Does it Work (Rough)?  In this animation, we can see how the ribosome (green and yellow) preforms eukaryotic translation, the process where proteins (blue) are used to build the cell membrane GABE

How Does It Work (Smooth)?  The main job of the smooth ER is to synthesize lipids. Lipids are natural occurring molecules including fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, and K) and others. The main functions of lipids include energy storage, as structural components of cell membranes, and as important signaling molecules.  The Smooth ER is also in charge of detoxifying materials and transporting them to the Golgi Apparatus GABE

Wrapping it Up  The rough ER uses ribosomes to synthesize proteins the can be used to build up the cell membrane  The smooth ER synthesizes lipids and detoxifies material to be sent to the Golgi Apparatus Wes
