made a great contribution made great achievements succeeded in their scientific career overcome many difficulties

Pair work It’s very pity that these scientists couldn’t get together to have a talk. Now let’s organize a party for them. Because of an advanced machine called Time Machine, all the scientists from all different times can come to attend (join in) the party. What would they talk about?

They may talk about these 1.I wonder if you’re… 2.I know you because I’ve heard that you… 3.Thank you for knowing so much about me. 4.I’m the one who… 5.I’m really interested in your invention. …… They may ask about these What’s your nationality? (I’m from…) What are you interested in? What conclusion have you drawn? What are you proud of? What leads to your success? (My cautiousness/ creativeness/ determination…leads to…) ……

Homework 1. Tell your partner about the great scientists and their achievements. 2. Revise the new words and expressions learned in this lesson, and preview those of the reading text. 3. Finish the words practice in Page 4.

Stephen Hawking 斯帝芬 · 霍金 The theory about black holes What is a black hole?

If you put enough matter ( 物质 ) in one small place, it creates a black hole, a gravitational field ( 引力场 ) so intense ( 密集 ) that nothing, not even light, can escape from ( 从 …… 逃脱 ) it. A black hole is an extremely weird( 神秘的 )object. Its intense gravitational field changes space and time in fundamental ways. Each black hole has only three measurable properties ( 组成部分 ) : mass ( 质量 ), electrical charge ( 电荷 ) and rotational momentum ( 旋 转动量 ). Most astronomers now believe that there is a stupendously huge black hole in the inner core of our galaxy ( 银河系 ), billions of times heavier than the sun. It spins ( 快速旋转 ) in the center of a rotating whirlpool ( 旋转的漩涡 ) of hot gas and dust, slowly sucking ( 吸 引 ) it in.
