2. MDBC History MDBC began in 1998 when Mayor Daley served as ‘Principal for a Day’ at Orr High School. A student suggested that one way he could continue working with the school was to start an after-school book discussion group. MDBC has been recognized by the American Library Association as one of the six exemplary after-school programs for young adults in the United States. In 2007 MDBC grew from approximately 2,100 students in 80 schools to 3,600 students in 150 schools. MDBC Middle School was piloted in 2007 for only 500 students but grew to include 1,500 students in over 70 schools.

3. Facilitator Responsibilities Attend the facilitator information meeting Recruit students who will participate as regular book club members Conduct six book club meetings, lasting one and a half hours each, on an approximately monthly basis Submit packing slip invoices and monthly reports/timesheets to the Dept. of Libraries -Attn: Angela Bowman Promote club meetings within the school Maintain regular, effective communication with the MDBC staff through email

5. Overview/Monthly Update Reports 1.7th and 8th grade students are encouraged to participate in MDBC – Middle School 2.No participation fee is assessed; students will receive books for their personal libraries 3.Students will receive gifts such as T-shirts, pens and bookmarks 4.Members will have the opportunity to attend the annual Spring Conference in May through a lottery system 5.Monthly reports must contain MDBC Facilitator's) and Principal signatures.

8. 1.) Mayor Daley’s Middle School Book Club Facilitators will be compensated for up to six (6) MDBC meetings (held before or after school) 2.) You will be compensated 1.5 hours for each meeting held, totaling up to 9 hours at the extended day pay rate of $32.45 3.) Clubs with fifteen or fewer attending members should have one (1) facilitator Clubs with sixteen or more attending members can have two (2) facilitators (A letter of explanation/justification must be submitted with the MDBC-Middle School application for clubs with 25 or more students) 4.) To be eligible to receive compensation and to be invited to participate in the club during the following school year, facilitators must do the following: Submit a MDBC Monthly Report Form/Timesheet each month Submit the packing invoice for books received for each monthly MDBC meeting. Book #3 - Chicken Soup for the Pre-Teen Soul: 101 stories of changes, choices and growing up for kids ages 9-13 by Jack Canfield Written by and for preteens, this uplifting collection of stories touches on the emotions and situations they experience every day: making and losing friends, fitting in while keeping their personal identity, discovering the opposite sex, dealing with pressures at school including violence, and coping with family issues such as divorce.
