E DUGAMING W ORKSHOP SESSION : M ONDAY 8:00 – 9:20 AM I NTRODUCTION AND CURRICULUM ISSUES Mary Rasley

A GENDA : Welcome Introductions Goals Educational games and fun Brainstorming curriculum issues Please ask questions as we go…

G OALS OF THE WORKSHOP : To teach you, the educational experts, game design and development activities to: Prepare you to design and create games that are NOT computer-based that will engage students more fully in your subject areas Provide a foundation of “computational thinking” patterns in those games in order to strengthen the critical thinking skills of your students Make you aware of the career areas that exist in the computer game industry Timeline: We anticipate that you will have a working prototype of your game that has been student tested by the end of the workshop in November.

E DUCATIONAL GAMES AND FUN : Chocolate covered broccoli – games as rote memorization tools are not fun What we can do: Find the fun in content: 1960: The Making of a President http://www.zmangames.com/boardgames/1960.htm http://www.zmangames.com/boardgames/1960.htm Oregon Trail http://oregontrail.com/hmh/site/oregontrail/http://oregontrail.com/hmh/site/oregontrail/ Abstracted simulations allow us to explore something interactively via hands-on learning Think about systems… math and science are heavily systems (relationship of components) related – so are games Tradeoffs happen in life and in games Economics is part of life and in-game economies exist in many games Cause and effect is clearly illustrated in games (and life) Concepts and systems in class are dynamic and interesting – use those for games Model games after ones your students already play by changing the subject matter – involve students in the choice

M ORE ON “ FUN ” http://bigthink.com/ideas/19133

B RAINSTORMING A CTIVITY : Break into groups of 4 or 5 based on your subject areas Please consider the following question: What topics would benefit your students from “gamification” Use a sheet of construction paper and markers to record your ideas – we’ll post them in the room For each idea consider: What do you want your students to learn/accomplish? What are the traditional components of that learning in regard to: Skills? Knowledge? Application? We will report out to the entire group to see what additional ideas we can generate
