2 CM220 College Composition II Tuesday, October 20, 2015 2 Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation unit 2 agenda Our seminar will focus on:  Differences between formal and informal writing  Audience  How research can support our ideas  What makes a good persuasive paper topic  What constitutes reliable information In this unit, we will discuss how to:  Discuss observation  Recognize the difference between informal and formal writing  Use a variety of scholarly Internet sources  Use the Kaplan Online Library to find a range of relevant sources  Review the need for APA citations

3 Course Questions  The course is just beginning, and I’m sure many of you have concerns. It’s no secret that writing isn’t a favorite subject for students, so I want to open the for discussion and concerns:  What questions do you have?  What concerns you most about this class?  What do you like/dislike about writing?  What can I do to make this term more manageable?

10 CM220 College Composition II Tuesday, October 20, 2015 10 Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation modes of research essays Informative Mode: simply reports information; objective and “report-like.” The Tips/Advice Mode: gives suggestions to a broad audience; while persuasive in nature, it is not specific and focused enough. Persuasive Mode: very assertive, states a specific position on an issue (not on a broad topic), and also persuades the reader to do something specific.

Reliable sources can be found in scholarly and professional journals and trade publications. These sources go through a rigorous process of peer-review in which other academic and professional experts review and evaluate the writing for content, integrity and structure.

Search engines (like Google, Yahoo or MSN) are free to anyone with access to the Internet, but there are no review or evaluation standards, and since nearly anyone can publish web pages, the information is not always reliable.GoogleYahooMSN WikipediaWikipedia is NOT scholarly site. Although there are some reputable, scholarly contributors, it is an online encyclopedia that anyone (regardless of credentials) can edit.

16 CM220 College Composition II Tuesday, October 20, 2015 16 Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation your final project – a persuasive research paper:  Have a specific target audience in mind.  Be assertive and persuasive.  Focus on a specific issue (not just a topic area).  Use research as support for your position.  Consider the opposition’s points and refute them.

17 CM220 College Composition II Tuesday, October 20, 2015 17 Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation a look ahead - unit 3 The Unit 3 seminar will focus on:  Research and source evaluation, as well as logical fallacies  The Unit 3: we’ll be discussing your topic and the controversies you have found about that topic.  Unit 3 Project: The project is to create an APA title page.  Note for Unit 4 and 5: if you cannot find sources for your topic, it may not be suitable topic to write a paper for this class.  Likewise, if you cannot find a clear debate in the sources you found (authors who take opposing positions), you may wish to rethink your topic.
