CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 CISM Vision:

CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling GOAL: Create a physics-based numerical simulation model that describes the space environment from the Sun to the Earth. USES: Scientific tool for increased understanding of the complex space environment. Specification and forecast tool for space weather prediction. Education tool for teaching about the space environment. MANDATE: in the National Space Weather Program plan

CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 The Sun-Earth System Not to scale

CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 Methodology Build an integrated model by coupling models of components of the system that have already been developed and tested. In some cases models need to be developed. Build a full model early using empirical or other models for missing components, and replace as physics based models are developed.

CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 The CISM Advisory Council “The Center Director must assure that the Center: (a) Establish, maintain and convene at least annually an external advisory committee. The CISM Advisory Council shall hold its first meeting within the first year of funding. The advisors shall include representation from those served by the Council (academic institutions, industry, national labs, etc.)…. The function of the CISM Advisory Council is to provide guidance, advice, and oversight for all the centers activities, consistent with its vision, goals, and objectives. The CISM Advisory Council shall develop a charter and submit it with the first annual progress report.” (CISM Cooperative Agreement)

CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 The CISM Advisory Council is a fresh set of eyes to come in and look at what we’re doing and to make suggestions of how we can be doing it better. Do CISM’s objectives make sense? Are we trying to do too much, or should we be doing more? If so what? Are we using our resources effectively and efficiently in order to achieve those objectives? Do we have the balance of our program right?

CISM Advisory Council Meeting 4 March 2003 Goals for this Advisory Council Meeting Form the Advisory Council into a cohesive group Inform the Council of NSF’s general expectations for an STC Bring the Council up-to-speed on CISM’s vision, goals and plans, and initial progress Discuss and adopt an Advisory Council Charter Obtain the Council’s advice and feedback on our plans and initial work
