Home There are nearly 34,000 schools in the UK. Educating young people about the importance of recycling will help to reduce waste and improve the environment. Recycling can: * enable the whole school community to work together * reduce waste * save energy * save resources * save money * raise awareness of environmental issues * help tackle climate change

Recycling Recycled paper has to be sorted, graded and slushed into pulp before it is cleaned and de-inked suitable for papermaking. Recycling can divert waste from landfill and reduce the release of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Learning about recycling will offer young people the opportunity to work as part of a team to plan, implement and maintain a coordinated recycling programme. Recycling will reduce the cost of rubbish collections.

Benefits Up to 50% of waste in the average school or college dustbin could be composted. Learning about recycling will offer young people the opportunity to work as part of a team to plan, implement and maintain a coordinated recycling programme. To avoid sludge, aim for a 50/50 green/brown balance: greens include fruit, tea bags, grass, plants and flowers, browns include scrunched up thin cardboard, cereal and tea packets, shredded paper, egg boxes

Paper Recycling Paper is the main form of waste created by schools and colleges. At least a quarter of all its rubbish. It takes less energy to make products from recycled materials such as paper and cardboard than raw materials.

Composting Up to 50% of waste in the average school or college dustbin could be composted. The compost in an average compost bin will take a year to rot down. Can be used on flowerbeds, tubs or vegetable patches around the grounds.
