2 Born January 19 th 1809. Son of David and Elizabeth Arnold Poe. Father died in 1810. Mother died December of 1811. Foster son of John Allen.

3 In 1820 he attended the University of Virginia for only one year. studied Latin and poetry. Hobbies included Swimming and acting.

4 Enlisted into the army as Edgar A. Perry. At the age of eighteen, stating on the application that he was twenty-two. Applied to West Point military academy He soon fell into debt again at West Point. Neglected the Military duties. Was discharged from the academy.

5 In 1835 he returned to Richmond to work as an editor on the Southern Literary Messenger. he married his thirteen-year old cousin Virginia Started his own magazine: The Penn Magazine, later renamed The Stylus.

6 In 1843 he was invited to give a lecture in Washington D. C. to promote his magazine. Edgar appeared at the White House, drunk and ruined the greatest opportunity to support his magazine.

7 His wife Virginia died in January 1847, age 25. Departed for a business trip in New York City, 1849 to benefit his Magazine. Found drunk and confused on his way their and was taken to the hospital. Poe died while in the hospital on October 7 th 1849 with his last words, “Lord help my poor soul”
