4 * Pros * Main source for World Wide news * Advertising * Entertainment * Cons * Obesity * Promotion of Sex and Violence

5 * # 1 source for the news * Before the television, people got their news by: * Newspaper * Radio * Word of mouth * Majority of people would rather watch then listen

6 * Before graduating high school, the average American sees 360,000 commercials * Money from commercials  TV Networks  Fund TV shows * $30,477,000,000 – 2011 cable advertising revenue * Keeps us in touch with what is on the market

7 * Most common source of entertainment * 51 hours * Average amount a household has the television on per week * 111.3 million viewers watched the 2012 Super Bowl between The Patriots and The Giants * Record setting * Lots of Variety

8 * Children 6-11 * 1963 – 4.5% seriously overweight * 2009 – 13.9% seriously overweight * Watch average 3 hours a day of television * 54% have a television in their room * Many children and adults would rather watch television than be active * TV viewing time snacking physical activity

9 * Violence * 73% of the time the people in TV dramas who commit violent acts go unpunished * By age 18, the average American child sees 200,000 violent acts on TV * 20,000 murders * Most by handguns

10 * Sexual Content * In a sample of TV programs taken in 2002: * 64% of programs had sexual content * 1 in every 7 shows included a portrayal of sexual intercourse * Children younger than 8 cannot uniformly discriminate between real life and fantasy/entertainment

11 * The television has its perks like: * Source for news * Entertainment * It also has negative effects like: * Obesity * Promotion of sex and violence * Used in moderation, I believe the television is harmless and essential in todays world
