3 Halloween Annual holiday celebrated on October 31 Has roots in Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced “sow-an” or “sow-in”) and the Christian day of All Saints The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through

4 Halloween costumes The tradition of wearing costumes also dates back to ancient Celts Celts wore costumes and masks to fool the spirits Men disguised themselves as harmful spirits and to avoid harm The name Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even

5 Halloween symbols - Jack-o'-lantern In traditional Celtic Halloween festivals, large turnips were hollowed out, carved with faces and placed in windows to ward off evil spirits.The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their doorstep after dark.

6 Halloween tradition - Trick-or-treating Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.

7 St. Patrick (387 - 493) A Romano-Briton and Christian missionary Patron of saint of Ireland When he was 14, he was captured from Britain by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland He stayed in Ireland for 6 years before he escaped and returned to his family where he entered the Church He returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop

8 St. Patrick's Day A legend credits Patrick for banishing snakes form Ireland Another legend credits him with teaching the Irish about the concept of the Trinity by shoving the people the shamrock (a 3-leaved clover) The shamrock has been registered as a trademark by the Government of Ireland March 17, popularly known as St. Patrick's Day, is believed to be his death date

9 St. Patrick's Day around the world Chicago is famous for dyeing the Chicago River green on the day of the St. Patrick’s Day parade Boston’s Charitable Irish Society held America's first St. Patrick's Day celebration in 1737 and the city continues to be one of the country’s destinations of choice for the holiday—the parade alone attracts over 600,000 people. In Tokyo the tradition started in 1992 to introduce Japanese people to Irish culture
