3 Aim: Why do atoms bond? Atoms attain a stable valence electron configuration by bonding with other atoms. Noble gases have stable electron configurations and tend not to bond.

5 Aim: Why do atoms bond? When an atom gains one or more electrons, it becomes a negative ion and its radius increases. When an atoms loses one or more electrons, it becomes a positive ion and its radius decreases.

7 Aim: Why do atoms bond? The bonds of water and carbon dioxide have less energy than the bonds of sugar, and the difference between the energy of the two is what is used to live. When a bond is broken, energy is absorbed. Therefore bond breaking is endothermic. When a bond is formed, energy is released. Therefore bond formation is exothermic.
