2 What is similar about us?  Who are we trying to get active?  How do we track results?  How does this impact our organization financially?

3 Risk factors impacting employee health 1. Excess stress 2. High blood pressure 3. Smoking 4. Back injuries 5. Overweight 6. Alcohol abuse 7. Drug abuse 8. Depression 9. Other mental health problems

4 The Stats don’t lie  Canada Life Assurance – fitness program generated a benefit cost ratio of 3 to 1  Xerox – WHP (workplace health programs) participants filed 37% fewer workers comp claims  Washoe County school district – WHP participants missed 3 fewer days  Thousands of companies show this works

5 What works?  The key to any employee health and wellness plan is to have an integrated, strategic plan that is supported at all levels of the organization

6 New Physical Activity Guidelines  150min per week  10min bouts  Moderate intensity  Vigorous intensity  Strength training at least twice a week  More is better  Exercise never needs to be painful

7 Applying the new guidelines to the workplace  Must be support behind any program  What can you do before and after? Walking/running groups Stairclimbing Yoga/ group exercise classes Stretching classes Zumba Healthy weights clubs/classes

8 During the work day Activities/programs for breaks ○ 10min bouts Power walk On the spot exercises Climb stairs Skip Abdominal and low back exercises Squats, lunges Stretching 100’s of exercises that can be done at a desk or small workplace

9 10min bouts (cont’d)  Average person should be able to complete 5 sets of 12 reps with a 30 sec rest  Have days that are muscle group themed and send out exercises  Simple You Tube video or recipe cards work great

10 10min bouts (cont’d)  Set weekly and monthly goals  Do measurements to track progress (i.e., waist circumference, weight, body mass index)  “Hold their hand” through the process  Reward anyone that meets ‘progress’ goals Ex. Person completed 25-10min workouts in 1 month ---- It’s a start!

12 The right support system  A bunch of equipment is not a support system!!!!!!!  People need the tools and resources  What works about groups? Workout buddies Web sites

13 Removing Obstacles  What are your employees barriers to physical activity? Time Motivation Fear  They will come back – relapse is always a concern

14 What policies do you have in place?  Active breaks/lunches  Healthy Snacks  Healthy Workplace with programs to support it  Committee with budget and decision making authority

15 Leaderships role  Shared responsibility between HR Dept and other Departments and Managers
