Friday, October 23, 2008 Objective: Students will be able to create their own text features to unformatted articles.

Do-Now Below is a chart that has text in the left-hand column. In the middle column, the writer has formatted and changed the text. Write what you think they did to the text in the right-hand column. (One word answers are fine!) Answers?

Unformatted Text Unformatted text is a piece of writing that has not been formatted– meaning there are no titles, bold print, italics, or any other organizational features to it. They are hard to read and very confusing. Today you will practice “formatting” the text by adding text features to the article.

Getting started… Read the following article. Look at it. What is it missing? How would you edit it to make the article look more physically pleasing? Read along with Ms. Samadi to help her make sub-titles and a title.

Sending an IM, or instant message, is a great way to stay in contact with your family, friends and coworkers. Quick and easy, instant messaging is not just for kids anymore. Follow these steps to learn how to IM and you will be having online conversations in no time. There are many free programs available for download. AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft Messenger and ICQ are popular free IM programs. A downloadable IM will install quickly and easily. Read the tutorial or help guide to learn about the program. The program you choose will lead you through the steps to sign up and create a screen name. People will use this name to IM you, so choose something that is easy to remember but unique to your personality. If you would like to stay anonymous on the web, do not use your real name as your screen name. Tell your friends about your new screen name and add them to your IM friends list. Add other contact information for your friends including phone number, address and birthday. Choose an icon or photo that people will see when they instant message you. You can also change your fonts and colors. Select the appropriate security features. The IM program will most likely have a place where you can protect your privacy by selecting who is allowed to IM you. Some programs let you choose when and how others see if you are online. Start instant messaging. Follow your IM program's instructions to click on a friend's name and send a message.
