3. Prohibited! Food and drinks, including bottled water are never allowed in the Lab This includes GUM and CANDY!

4. Long hair and bulky clothing are dangerous in the lab –These can be drawn through chemicals. –These can get caught on lab tools. –These can catch on fire. Tie back long hair, roll up sleeves, & Always wear your laboratory apron and safety goggles.

5. Do not wear dangling jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, watches, dangling earrings) in the lab! –These may catch on a piece of equipment and cause an accident.

7. LAB is NOT your like your house -DO NOT search through cabinets or stock room -DO NOT wander -DO NOT try your own “recipes” or experiments DO sit at your seat and follow all directions

8. Types of accidents and how to handle them:

9. Remain calm! A minor problem quickly becomes a major one if you don't.

10. Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible! Horse-play will not be tolerated ( , $) horseplay –n. rough, boisterous, or rowdy play

11. Broken Glass: This is the most common accident in the lab, even with the best of care –Proper use of equipment  NO TROUBLE –Improper use, horseplay  LOTS of TROUBLE –Common sense  USE IT!

12. –If glassware is broken, stop where you are. –Report the breakage to your teacher. –Your teacher will collect the broken glass, not you.

13. Heating Glass: We are not glassblowers! Therefore, when using Bunsen burners or hot plates –You can’t “see” when glass is hot (such as glowing) –Before you touch it, test it by slowly approaching it with the back of your hand –If you detect heat, don’t touch it!

14. Inserting Glass: When putting a glass tubing or a thermometer into a rubber stopper, always –Protect your hands with a towel –Use glycerol to lubricate the ends –Use a twisting motion to insert the glass slowly

15. Chemical Spills: You are to treat all chemicals and spills as DANGEROUS. –Stop where you are and tell the teacher when there is a spill.

16. Lab Safety Equipment

17. Eye Wash Station: -The station should only be used if chemicals come in direct contact with the eyes. -Flood eyes and eyelids with water for a minimum of 15 minutes.

18. Safety Shower: –Use the shower provides if large amounts of chemicals are spilled or splashed onto the skin or clothing.

19. Fire Safety Blanket: Stop, Drop, and Roll !!!! -Use only after person stops, drops, & rolls –Use on PEOPLE, not things.

20. In case of a fire: Immediately notify your teacher. Your teacher will operate the fire extinguisher, NOT YOU.

22. Electrical Safety Unplug the electrical plug from its socket by pulling on the PLUG, not the electrical cord.electrical plug

23. Who cleans up after each lab? –STUDENTS clean up! –Dispose of chemicals as directed by your teacher –Do not put unused portions back in the original container! –Rinse and dry all glassware. –Put all materials back as you found them. –Clean and dry your lab table. –WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE LEAVING THE LAB.
